Free Workshop

ABV Testing for Breweries Using Gas Chromatography

Accurate ABV measurement matters. For low and no alcohol products, it's critical.

Join us at Ellutia's lab in Ely for a free, hands-on workshop. You'll learn how gas chromatography works, prepare your own calibration standards and run your samples through the instrument yourself.

We can also test for VDKs on the day.

What happens on the day

Sessions run from 10:00 to 16:00. Here's how the day breaks down.

This is a working day in a real laboratory. You won't just watch a demonstration. You'll prepare your own standards, run your own samples, and analyse your own results. By the end of the day you'll have a clear picture of what gas chromatography can do for your brewery.

Morning introduction

The day starts with a short presentation covering what gas chromatography is and how it is used in the brewing industry. From ABV measurement to VDK analysis and beyond.

Making your calibration standards

You'll head into the lab and learn how to prepare a full range of calibration standards. For ABV testing this typically runs from 0.01% to 10%, covering the full range relevant to low and no alcohol products. You'll learn how to use a pipette correctly and the best practices for making accurate, repeatable standards.

Lunch

While you break for lunch, the GC is calibrated and ready for the afternoon.

Preparing your samples

After lunch you'll prepare your own samples for injection. For beer and cider this is a straightforward process. This is primarily degassing the sample before it goes into the instrument.

Running the analysis

You'll inject your samples and run them through the GC. Bring as many samples as you like. The more you test, the more you'll get out of the day.

Results and analysis

Your results are analysed and explained in full. You'll see exactly how your samples compare against the calibration standards and leave with a precise ABV or VDK reading for each one.

Why come to the workshop?

Here's what you get out of the day.

Hands-on experience

You won't just watch. You'll prepare your own standards, run your own samples, and operate the instrument yourself.

Real results from your own products

You leave with actual analytical data from your own beer, cider, or low/no alcohol products. Not a demo. Not simulated data.

Small group, expert-led

Sessions are limited to 8 people. You'll have direct access to Ellutia's applications team throughout the day.

Bring multiple samples

Test ABV, VDKs, or both. Bring as many samples as you like and make the most of your time in the lab.

Completely free

No cost, no obligation. Just a practical day in a working laboratory.

Who should come?

This workshop is for anyone in the brewing industry who wants to understand how gas chromatography can improve their product testing.

If you brew beer, cider, or low and no alcohol products and you want more confidence in your ABV measurements, this workshop is for you.

You don't need any laboratory experience or knowledge of gas chromatography. The day is designed to be accessible to anyone -- from head brewers and QC technicians to lab managers considering GC for the first time.

It's particularly relevant if you produce low or no alcohol products, where precise ABV measurement isn't just useful. It's a legal requirement.
